Gulf Islands National Seashore (GUIS)! From Mississippi to Florida, the seashore abounds with sparkling blue waters, beautiful sugar white beaches, historic forts, wildlife, and coastal marshes. The Seashore is home to the nests of four species of sea turtles, over 300 species of birds, and you can spot bottlenose dolphins from the beaches. The largest of the National Seashores, GUIS includes 12 separate units stretching eastward 160 miles from Cat Island, Mississippi to Fort Walton, Florida. The climate is sunny and warm most of the year. Join us in preserving and protecting these precious natural resources. This announcement is open until Thursday, November 8, 2012. Multiple positions will be filled from this announcement. Lists of qualified candidates will be referred based on the hiring needs of Gulf Islands National Seashore. This is a temporary NTE 1039 hour seasonal lead lifeguard position. Positions may be part time early in the season and full time during the summer season. Positions will be located in both the Florida and Mississippi Districts of the park. Selectees for the Florida District will perform lifeguard duties at one of several beach locations in the Pensacola Beach area. Selectees for the Mississippi District will perform lifeguard duties at the West Ship Island location. If selected for one district and during the appointment and hiring needs change, you may be assigned to the other district. The island is located approximately 12 miles off the coast of Biloxi/Gulfport and is accessible only by boat.

Serves as a lead lifeguard for Florida or Mississippi District. May lead up to 9 lifeguards. Performs lifeguard services during assigned tours of duty, including search and rescue, lifesaving, and preventive life guarding. Monitors activities within assigned beach area and observes the condition and behavior of swimmers to ascertain any potential problems. Rescues and resuscitates individuals in danger of drowning and renders emergency medical services at the first responder level or higher to injuries. Uses variety of techniques such as artificial respiration, CPR, and first aid. Notifies emergency medical services and/or other appropriate personnel for more serious accidents/injuries. Lead duties may include but not limited to, supervision of day to day lifeguard operations, scheduling,completing monthly statistics,instructing park cadets, Junior Lifeguard Program and assisting with park trainee program.

GS-5 level: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-4 level in the Federal service is required to qualify for this position. Specialized experience includes life guarding or water rescue.
4-years above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education.'

Applicants for lifeguard positions must pass the annual pre-employment performance test which includes the following: Swim 600 yards in less than 10 minutes and run 1 1/2 miles in less than 14 minutes in one testing session. For details of the performance test, ****.
Incumbent must possess and maintain certifications from a nationally recognized organization such as a Red Cross or American Heart Association for Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid, and lifeguard training.
You will need to work outdoors, often under adverse weather conditions.
You will need to pass the Open Water Rescue training.
You will need to successfully complete and pass the National Registry First Responder Course.
Once the application process is complete, a review of your application will be
made to ensure you meet the qualification requirements of the position. Your

and/or supporting documentation, a determination is made that your resume does

The occupational questionnaire is designed to measure your ability in the
following competencies:
1. Ability to monitor surf and weather conditions and work as a lifeguard rescuing swimmers.
2. Ability to provide emergency first aid.
3. Ability to provide information and deal with people in a stressful situation.
4. Ability to lead a beach recreational program.
Basis for Rating: Category rating procedures will be used to rate and rank
candidates. Candidates will be ranked into 3 categories:
BEST QUALIFIED - applicants who possess experience that well exceeds the minimum
qualifications of the position, including selective or screen-out factors, and
are highly proficient in the requirements of the job and able to perform
effectively in the position.
WELL QUALIFIED - applicants who meet the minimum qualifications of the job
including selective or screen-out factors, and are proficient in most of the
requirements of the position.
QUALIFIED - applicants who meet the minimum qualifications of the job including
selective or screen-out factors, and are proficient in some, but not all, of the
requirements of the position.
Veterans Preference applies to category rating. Veterans with preference who
meet the qualifications requirements for this position will be listed above all
non-veterans in alphabetical order within each quality category. In addition,
veterans who meet the qualification requirements for this position who have a
compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent will be placed
