Performs responsible paraprofessional work assisting in the planning, coordination and supervision of therapeutic recreation Summer Camp Program for ages 8-21 with disabilities; does related work as required.
Position will be 40 hours per week. Position will run from early May through early August. Hours in May and August are flexible, but from June 10 to July 19 the hours will be 8am to 5pm.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Assists in planning, conducts and supervises recreation activities suited to the needs of participants with disabilities;
Schedules and supervises use of facilities by participant groups and establishes and enforces safety and other rules and regulations, and maintains order and discipline;
Conducts public relations for therapeutic programs, publicizes events and special activities;
Instructs program personnel in appropriate supervisory methods;
Maintains contact with various community groups and organizations;
Participates in teaching of arts and crafts, personal health and hygiene, physical and social therapy, indoor and outdoor games and other therapeutic and/or recreational activities, personally gives instruction or cooperates with specialized instructors;
Supervises therapeutic aides, instructors, volunteer, student workers;
Prepares report on activities, requests materials and supplies;
Supervises or assists in the maintaining of cleanliness and order of the facility and recreational equipment;
Performs related tasks as required.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
Education: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate’s degree from an accredited college with major work in physical education, recreation, art or related field. Minimally, must possess high school diploma or GED and
of college courses in therapeutic recreation, psychology, education or related subjects.
Experience: At least 2 years of experience with individuals with disabilities is required. Previous experience in organized recreational programs required. E
xperience in therapeutic program planning, program supervision and agency coordination required.
Experience with sign language, behavior modification, CPR/First Aid, lifting/assistance with mobility-challenged individuals and experience with individuals with autism preferred.
General knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of public recreation and the social behavioral characteristics of the program participants; general knowledge of first aid practices and techniques; general knowledge of the principles, rules, materials and equipment requirements of the recreational or therapeutic activity to which assigned. Ability to adhere to program standards and objectives outlined by superiors, and to lead and instruct groups in games, sports and other recreational activities; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public; ability to prepare records and reports.
Special Requirements: Possession of a valid appropriate driver’s permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia preferred.
