This employee provides a variety of specialized recreational services for individuals with disabilities of all ages (children, teens, adults, senior adults) in a variety of settings with a high emphasis on camps, classes for individuals with disabilities, and family programming. Disabilities include, but are not limited to intellectual and developmental disabilities, Autism, emotional disabilities, learning disabilities, neurological impairments, and mental illness. The position is in the Therapeutic Recreation Office within the Age-Based Section and involves: significant interdisciplinary collaboration and teamwork within the department and other county agencies; daily travel within Arlington to other County facilities; and traveling within the metropolitan area to various activities.
Specific duties include:
- assessing needs;
- developing individual/group goals & objectives;
- designing and directly implementing specialized activity interventions;
- working extensively, face-to-face, with program participants and their guardians;
- documenting participant progress daily and monthly, and completing written evaluations of program activities;
- devising and implementing behavior management plans;
- supervising two specialized summer camp programs and two winter/spring camps;
- coordinating part-time staff and volunteers;
- designing and conducting training for staff, volunteers and consumers related to: disabling conditions, behavior management, prevention/intervention strategies, accessibility and mainstreaming;
- developing family leisure education programming;
- assisting general recreation staff in the development of programs and adaptations to promote accessibility and increase accommodations for persons with disabilities; and
- participating on department, division, and county-wide task forces and committees.
Minimum: Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreation, Special Education, Adapted Physical Education or a related field, plus two years of experience in recreation service provision. One year must include experience assessing, planning, and implementing specialized recreational activities for participants with special needs and/or other at-risk populations.
Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis. A Master's degree in a directly related field may substitute for one year of the required experience.
Possession of a current, valid Therapeutic Recreation Certification (CTRS) or the ability to obtain certification within one year of employment.
Possession of, or ability to obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence; or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
This is a 40 hour a week position and work hours are generally 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Employee will be required to work some weekends and late evenings, depending on programmatic needs.
Position is based at Langston/Brown Community Center but involves extensive travel daily within Arlington to other County facilities and also traveling within the metropolitan area to various activities.
The official title of this grade 9 position is PRCR Programmer II.
