The long running show, The Blue Man Group, which has been playing in Chicago at the Briar Street Theatre  for more than 10 years is facing significant layoffs.

A spokesman for the company said, ““Blue Man Productions recently made some changes within the organization in response to growing economic concerns. While the Chicago production of “Blue Man Group” remains strong at the Briar Street Theatre and is not in danger of closing, we recently reduced staffing in several areas, including our Blue Man and band performers.”

Created by Phil Stanton, Chris Wink, and Matt Goldman in 1988, The Blue Man Group has been featured on numerous television shows and advertisements. They are referred to as a creative organization. All of their appearances star three performers covered in blue paint, called the Blue Men.

While the show only ever uses three men at once, the Briar Street unit of Blue Man Group had employed up to 8 blue men. At one point, they were offering up to three shows a day.

However, the recession has not left these Blue Men untouched, and there are now only three full-time performers.

The group has also been discounting tickets, whereas it once had little trouble selling out at full price.
