Delta Air Lines has extended the deadline for their employee buyout offer. This comes amidst an announced 2,000 job cuts.
Delta extended the deadline 12 days to February 11, from a prior date of January 31. They announced the buyout plan in December and announced the 2,000 layoffs on January 15th.
The buyouts come as a part of Delta’s plans to eliminate flight capacity by 8 percent in 2009 after merging with Northwest Airlines. The airline has reduced jobs and flights in an effort to strengthen their bottom line as the travel industry declines in the current recession.
Northwest and Delta had cut thousands of jobs in 2008 via early retirements and other buyouts.
Delta offered volunatary severance to employees in March. More than 4,000 employees applied. Northwest, on the other hand, slashed 2,000 jobs before merging with Delta.
Richard Anderson, CEO of Delta, claims that the buyout program is generating interest.
“Extending the deadline is the right thing to do and allows you more time to get your questions answered and to make the right decisions for you and your families,” said Anderson in a recorded message to Bloomberg.
